 Illness Guidelines

How sick is too sick?

Here are some of the common symptoms that, if present, would require you to keep your child home.  A full list of District 20's illness guidelines can be found below.
  • Temperature of 100.5 or higher without medication
  • Vomiting or diarrhea twice in the previous 24 hours until resolved without medication
  • Uncontrolled cough or other common cold symptoms that are so severe the student cannot function at school
  • Undiagnosed skin rash or open lesions that are rapidly changing or accompanied by fever
  • If prescribed antibiotics, student must receive 24 hours treatment before returning to school
  • Flu-like symptoms.  Student must stay at home until symptoms are resolved for 24 hours without the use of medication.

 Medication Policies

What about medications at school?

Here are some district guidelines regarding medication administration in middle schools.  Forms can be found below.
  • Each medication must be accompanied by a Permission to Administer Medication Form.  The form must be completed in it's entirety by a physician or other health care provider with prescriptive authority and signed by the provider and the parent or guardian.
  • All medications must be provided in the original, factory-labeled container and be unexpired.
  • Parents or guardians must transport ALL medication to and from school.  Medications will not be sent home with a student.  Medications brought in by students will be held for parent pick up.
  • ALL medications will be kept in the health room with the exception of emergency medications for asthma, allergies, or diabetes which can be kept by the student.  These self-carried medications must be authorized by the physician, school nurse, and parent.
  • Standardized action plan forms are REQUIRED for asthma, severe allergies, and seizures.
